Will ceramic coating stop rock chips and scratches? Does it self-heal?
Short answer
No. A ceramic coating does not stop rock chips or deep scratches, and it does not self-heal. Paint protection film is what stops chips and heals light scratches. A coating's job is gloss, easier cleaning and protection from everyday grime.

Why can't a coating stop chips?
A coating is extremely thin, far thinner than a sheet of paper. A rock at highway speed hits with more force than a thin layer can absorb. Film is much thicker and flexible, so it takes the hit instead.
What about the '9H' hardness I've heard about?
9H describes how hard the coating's surface is on a pencil hardness scale. It helps resist light marring from washing. It doesn't mean the car is scratch-proof or chip-proof.
What does a coating protect against?

So what should I do about chips?
Put paint protection film on the areas that get hit, usually the front bumper, hood and mirrors. Coating can go over the film, or over the rest of the car. See ceramic coating or paint protection film.
