Ceramic coating or paint protection film: which do you need?
Short answer
They do different jobs. A ceramic coating makes paint glossy and easier to clean, but it doesn't stop rock chips. Paint protection film is a clear, physical layer that stops chips and self-heals light scratches. Many drivers put film on the front of the car and coat the rest.
Quick facts
| Stops rock chips | Film: yes. Coating: no |
|---|---|
| Self-heals | Film: yes. Coating: no |
| Easier washing | Both |
| If doing both | Film goes on first, coating goes over it |
What is paint protection film?
It's a thick, clear film applied over the paint, like a screen protector for your phone. A rock hits the film instead of the paint. Light scratches in the film's top layer smooth themselves out.
Who needs film?
If you drive a lot of freeway miles (I-5 and I-405 send plenty of gravel flying), film on the hood, bumper and mirrors is what keeps the front end from getting peppered with chips.
Who is fine with just a coating?
If your main goals are gloss, easier washing and keeping road grime from sticking, a coating does that well. Just know it won't stop chips. See will ceramic coating stop rock chips?
If I get both, which goes first?
Film goes on first, then the coating goes over it. Some films already have a coating built in, so coating over them isn't needed.
How APC Auto Spa does it
APC Auto Spa is a certified installer of STEK paint protection film and Ceramic Pro coatings.
APC's films have a built-in coating, so they don't need a coating on top. APC can coat over other brands' films that aren't already coated.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a coating go on top of film?
- Yes. When both are done, film goes first and coating goes over it, unless the film already has a coating built in.
- Does film change how the car looks?
- Quality clear film is designed to be hard to notice once installed.
- Should I film the whole car?
- It depends on how you drive and how much protection you want. The front end takes most chips, so many drivers start there.
