How long does ceramic coating take to cure? Can it get wet?

Short answer

At APC Auto Spa, coatings are cured in the shop under infrared lights, so your car goes home the same day and can be driven and rained on right away. The coating keeps curing for the next 7 to 10 days, and you shouldn't wash the car until then.

What does 'curing' actually mean?

A coating goes on as a liquid and hardens into a thin, glass-like layer. Curing is that hardening. It's a lot like nail polish: dry to the touch quickly, but not fully hard for a while.

Why do I hear that a coated car must stay dry?

Without infrared curing, a freshly coated car usually needs to stay dry, often indoors overnight or longer. Manufacturer guidance can mention waiting up to two weeks before certain exposure.

That advice is correct for coatings left to cure on their own. Infrared lights speed up the first, most delicate stage of curing, which is why the timeline at APC is shorter.

Why wait 7 to 10 days to wash?

Even after it can handle rain, the coating is still hardening. Soap, scrubbing and car wash chemicals during that window can interfere with it. Rain just sits on top and rolls off.

If a bird dropping lands on the car in that first week, gently rinse it off with plain water rather than scrubbing.

How APC Auto Spa does it

APC Auto Spa cures every coating in-house under infrared lights before the car leaves. That's what lets you drive home the same day, even in the rain.

Every package is completed in one day or less. See how long a ceramic coating appointment takes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive home in the rain right after coating?
Yes, after APC's infrared curing. Rain is fine. Just don't wash the car for 7 to 10 days.
Can I park outside overnight?
Yes, after infrared curing your car can be outside and get wet.
What happens if I wash it too soon?
Washing during the curing window can interfere with the coating while it's still hardening. Waiting the full 7 to 10 days is the safe choice.
